Spanish Bridge Park. The Tolai Acho, or Stone Bridge was built in 1880 and spanned the Agana River, whose course was greatly changed after WWII. On the south side of the bridge is a bronze statue of La Sirena, Guam's mythical mermaid. It is likely, according to archaeological reports, that before Spanish times women did much of the lagoon fishing. When the Spaniards arrived on Guam they found that the Chamorros went naked most of the time..Sirena was a pure lineal descendent of an Ancient Chamorro family which possessed the ability to work magic, such that whatever they said came to pass. This ability caused them to be very dignified, formal and cautious in their speech, never allowing anger to enter their thoughts, much less their words. Sirena had a very understanding mother but young girls can test even the most patient parents it was that whenever Sirena was needed for a chore she was out swimming with her friends in the ocean. One day, sent on an errand by her mother she passed by the tempting lagoon. It took only one glance at the sparkling waves and she was enchanted by the ever changing face of the ocean. Promises were quickly forgotten in favor of play with turtles and porpoise. Hours quickly passed and Sirena's mother, frantic with worry went to the beach. Fearing the worst she asked a fisherman of her daughter."Yes, I saw her". "She is out playing with her friends. "Overcome with relief and anger she vented herself with the words, "I wish she was a fish!" Instantly the young girl began to change. First her legs stuck together then her feet began to become one large fin. On shore Sirena's Grandmother had heard the thoughtless words directed to her favorite Grandchild. Aware of the inevitability of the magic, still she sought frantically for a way to save Sirena. In a flash of inspiration she shouted across the waters,
"NO, she shall only be half fish!"
